Women Fleeing Conflict-Affected Areas

Displaced woman fleeing conflict-affected areas in Nigeria

The conflicts in Nigeria disproportionately affect women through widespread gender-based violence, sexual abuse, and displacement.

Women constitute the majority of internally displaced persons (IDPs). About 3.5 million displaced women are living in camps, camp-like settings, and host communities, leaving them vulnerable to further abuse and a lack of basic needs, such as education and healthcare. Many women in Northern Nigeria have become sole providers for their families due to the death of men.

International organizations and human rights groups have expressed deep concern regarding the displacement of women in Nigeria. They say the crisis is a major humanitarian emergency driven by conflicts, Boko Haram, terrorism, and climate change.

When women are educated and economically independent, they are unlikely to be vulnerable to injustice, coercion, control, and violence.
