Women and children constitute the majority of internally displaced persons (IDPs), leaving them vulnerable to further abuse and lack of basic needs, such as education and healthcare. Many women in Northern Nigeria have however become sole providers for their families due to the death of men.
World leaders, international organizations, and human rights groups have expressed deep concern regarding the displacement of women in Nigeria. They all highlighted the crisis as a major humanitarian emergency driven by Conflicts, Boko Haram, terrorism and climate change. As of early 2026, the UN, and US officials have been focusing on the need to protect women from gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria. They call for urgent funding, and advocate for durable, long-term solutions for displaced women and girls.
